Siena is surrounded by a hilly landscape of considerable charm and is characterized by unity of medieval style. It is enrolled since 1995 in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Siena has an immense cultural and artistic heritage, due in large part to bloom, from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century of the “Scuola Senese di Pittura” (Sienese school of painting): the decorative beauty and elegance typical of gothic art are its main featues: from Duccio di Buoninsegna to Simone Martini, from Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti toDomenico and Taddeo di Bartolo and Matteo di Giovanni, the school was carried out, during the sixteenth century, by Domenico Beccafumi and Giovanni Antonio Bazzi.

Siena is also world famous for the Palio, which takes place in the Piazza del Campo twice a year (July 2 and August 16) and consists of a horse race among ten out of the seventeen districts (contrade) of the city.
